Sunshine picnic rounds up Enrichment Survival Cookery course
Students on the Enrichment Survival Cookery course at Havering Sixth Form College took advantage of the weather and dished up tasty treats for a summer picnic.
They cooked a variety of snacks, including sandwiches, sausage rolls, pizza, cakes and ice cream to enjoy as part of their last lesson of the course. |

HE and Careers Day – Wednesday June 22nd
Havering Sixth Form College’s Higher Education and Careers Event takes place in College on Wednesday June 22nd.
This event, which runs from 9.30am to 1.45pm and is aimed at Lower Sixth students, is not to be missed as it will provide information on the various options available to students when they leave the sixth form.

Final farewell Executive PA awards and presentation
Nine dedicated students on the Executive PA, Business and Admin course organised and hosted an end of year presentation attended by parents, tutors and College executives.
The students – the last ever group on the course which will not be running next year – talked about their recent trip to Italy and made comparisons between the culture, economy, history and climate of Rome and London.

Conference and cakes boost Christian Union fundraising
Students from Havering Sixth Form College’s Christian Union have been kept busy this year with a number of fundraising and social events.
The CU, which has between 40 and 50 members, has raised more than £300 for the College’s partnership charity EducAid. This amount will be enough to educate two children for a year in Sierra Leone in a school set up by the charity.

Tasty treats raise cash for Comic Relief
Staff from the ICT department at Havering Sixth Form College got into the spirit of Comic Relief by putting a smile on students’ faces with a food stall.
The smell of sizzling sausages, toast and pancakes filled the ICT centre corridors as teachers and other staff gave up their break time to cook some delicious food for students to buy.
The tasty treats raised a total of £85 for Comic Relief. |

University visit encourages students to aim high
High-achieving students from Havering Sixth Form College were invited to attend a specially organised event at City University – giving them a unique insight into higher education.
The group of 21 students spent the day at the University in Clerkenwell, London taking advantage of the opportunity to find out all about preparing for life after A Levels.

Music students organise recital for EducAid
Warm congratulations were paid to Havering Sixth Form College student Elizabeth Joyce along with other members of the upper sixth A Level Music group who organised a recital at St Edward’s Church, Market Place, Romford.
The event was supported by parents, friends and members of the St Edward’s congregation and a total of £64 was raised for the College’s partner charity, EducAid which provides free secondary education for youngsters in Sierra Leone, Africa.

A team of Creative and Media Advanced Diploma students at Havering Sixth Form College won the opportunity to produce a DVD promoting Apprenticeships in Havering.

College Open Days attract thousands of prospective students
Havering Sixth Form College’s Open Days proved a great success with Year 11 pupils and their parents – many saying they had found subject presentations “excellent” and the staff and students welcoming and friendly.
The days, held on November 27th 2010 and January 15th 2011, were attended by well over 2,000 pupils from Havering and surrounding boroughs, giving them the opportunity to find out about facilities and courses run at the college in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch.

The students from Havering Sixth Form College are looking to collect £5,000 throughout 2011 for GibMissionAfricaUK to help fund the building of children’s centres and medical centres for the most poverty-stricken areas.

TV and theatre success for Performing Arts students
Performing Arts students from Havering Sixth Form College have gone on to achieve excellent success – starring in TV shows, theatre productions and one gaining a place at the prestigious RADA drama school.
Current student George Whitehead, an ex Albany School pupil, who is studying AS Drama and Theatre Studies at College, recently starred in BBC2 drama Excluded about a struggling boy in a struggling school. Part of BBC2’s School Season, the programme – and George - received great reviews. One newspaper said George “gave a convincing performance as troublesome pupil Mark”, and another said he was “superb in the principal role”

Prizes for students on Hairy Bikers’ TV show
Food technology students from Havering Sixth Form College had the chance to watch expert chefs in action when they were guests of TV’s The Hairy Bikers – and ended up leaving with two prizes.
The group went along to Television Studios in Shepherds Bush for the filming of The Hairy Bikers’ Cook-Off TV programme, which involves biker chefs Si King and Dave Myers in a search for Britain's best cooking family. The BBC2 show, which airs every weekday at 5.15pm, includes cooking challenges for the competing families, plenty of foody tips and a celebrity guest.

The day proved to be a huge success with around 1,200 Year 11 pupils from Havering schools taking time to find out about facilities and courses run at the college in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch.

The group, from the Foreign Languages School affiliated to Yunan University in Kunming, visited on Tuesday November 16th and were reunited with Havering Sixth Form students and teachers they had previously met during a College trip to China in October.

Budding actress and model Amanda Williams will be appearing in the Live Finals of the Miss UK 2011 contest after winning the public text vote for the whole of London.
Havering Sixth Form College student Amanda received the most amount of votes in her regional heat, and will now compete in the judges round – the live grand final being held in London in August 2011.

Six years ago Sue was shocked to learn that she was suffering from lung cancer. This month she showed just how she's turned her life around, by taking part in the Run 10K Cancer Research event at Hylands Park, Chelmsford and raising more than £200.

I am delighted with the A Level pass rate of 98% this year. This is another year of fantastic results. 39 students have achieved at least 3 A* or A grades, with 10 of these achieving 4 A* or A grades. The A*, A & B pass rate is 41.5%.

Results Day – Thursday, August 19th
This year Havering Sixth Form College is providing an increased level of support for students when they collect their results from College on 19th August. Results slips will be available for collection from 11am-2pm but the Careers Centre, Room S5 and the IT suite will all be open from 7.30am - 5pm for students to check results online and to check for university course vacancies.

Race for Life team set to raise over £3,000 for Cancer Research
We did it! Havering Sixth Form College’s fantastic team of 75 women took part in the Race for Life on Sunday July 4th – and look set to raise an incredible £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.
On a scorching hot day and cheered on by family, friends and supporters, the team joined the thousands of other like-minded women in a snaking sea of pink and white to complete the 5K course at Hylands Park, Chelmsford.
