Results Day – Thursday, August 19th
This year Havering Sixth Form College is providing an increased level of support for students when they collect their results from College on 19th August. Results slips will be available for collection from 11am-2pm but the Careers Centre, Room S5 and the IT suite will all be open from 7.30am - 5pm for students to check results online and to check for university course vacancies.

West Ham Utd Ladies FC Academy to start at Hornchurch
From September 2010, West Ham Utd Ladies FC will operate an academy for 16-19 year old females in partnership with Havering Sixth Form College, using training facilities at Hornchurch Sports Centre - an Everyone Active leisure facility - for two hours a week.

Each year the College participates in this scheme which gives the opportunity to recognise those students who have achieved through tremendous effort, shown huge progress, positive attitude and determination, have given their time to help others or who have been successful in the face of adversity.

Race for Life team set to raise over £3,000 for Cancer Research
We did it! Havering Sixth Form College’s fantastic team of 75 women took part in the Race for Life on Sunday July 4th – and look set to raise an incredible £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.
On a scorching hot day and cheered on by family, friends and supporters, the team joined the thousands of other like-minded women in a snaking sea of pink and white to complete the 5K course at Hylands Park, Chelmsford.

Beauty queen dream for Angela
College student Angela James is within touching distance of her dream to become Miss England 2010.
Former King’s Wood School pupil Angela, 18, who joined College in September 2008 and is taking A Levels in PE, Law and Psychology, has beaten 30,000 other girls to win through to the Grand Final of the last 50 competitors – which will be broadcast for the first time on Sky TV.

Munich rowing success for former College student and Olympic gold medallist Mark Hunter
Former Havering Sixth Form College student Mark Hunter produced an incredible comeback performance at the Rowing World Cup in Germany.
Mark, who attended College in 1995, was part of the Great Britain team which brought back five golds in an 11-medal haul at the season's second rowing World Cup held in Munich.

Sports Presentation Evening proves a winner
Sporting students were singled out for praise at the annual College PE and Sports Department Presentation Evening.
Young people taking A Level PE and those who represent the College in extra-curricular sports teams received awards for achievement, sportsmanship and improvement at the party and presentation night attended by around 90 students and held at Upminster Rugby Club.
Chloe Jackson, who represents Great Britain at Judo and plays women’s football, received the coveted Women’s Sports Personality of the Year award, while basketball and volleyball player Babawande Osiyemi was presented with the Men’s Sports Personality of the Year award.

Talented pupils have fun at Science Challenge Days
Gifted and talented secondary school pupils got busy on some brain-busting tasks when Havering Sixth Form College hosted the borough’s Science and Technology Challenge competition.
The challenge involved Year 8 and 9 pupils from 15 Havering schools taking part in four practical tasks in the College science labs, such as building a bridge from paper, making an electronic Lego robot and constructing a working model car.

A special ceremony attended by parents, staff and governors was held to honour the 35 students, who had all been nominated either for Outstanding Attendance, Most Improved Student or for showing Commitment and Reliability.

A fantastic group of students showed maturity and professionalism when they put on their end of course presentation and awards ceremony.
Students on the Executive PA, Business and Admin course, based at the College’s Morland House suite of offices in Romford, presented their findings from a trip in March to Barcelona, Spain, that they organised, funded and booked themselves.

You’re hired! Students got the chance to sign up for an exciting challenge competition based on TV show The Apprentice when the Next Top Boss Roadshow visited Havering Sixth Form College on May 4th.
The Next Top Boss initiative is a competition running through Thurrock, Essex and parts of East London, designed to give young people between the ages of 17 and 19 access to work experience, training and mentoring – leading to a high-flying career.

Film screenings success for arts and media students
Arts and Media students demonstrated their creativity, organisation and production talents when they set up a film screening festival called Film East at the CEME centre in Rainham.
The 11 Havering Sixth Form College students organised the event after attending an Events and Festival Management course.
The course was run by Annette Telesford, in partnership with East Potential (a charity that works to empower people to create a better future for themselves) and Circus Media (a media production house which provides training and support for the local community). The event was held in the 'pod' at CEME.

Live TV broadcasts for students on RAVE visit
Eight first year BTEC Media National Diploma students attended a taster day at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication (RAVE), in Chislehurst, Kent, in March.
The students were involved in producing content for a live TV broadcast based on a news item detailing the fictional fatal stabbing of a young person in the area.

Volleyball fundraiser for Sport Relief dedicated to memory of Russell Vroobel
Sporting Havering Sixth Form College students challenged staff to a volleyball competition to raise funds for Sport Relief.
The event was organised by students George Lock, Eddie Smith and Hayley Piggott as part of their BTEC National Diploma in Sports Development and Fitness – and it proved a great success with the staff eventually coming out winners. The staff team consisted of: Chris Burley, Sophie Lovell, Toni Brown, Mike Barbrook, Ian Budge, Martin Bell and Chris Patient.

Students praised for helping to clean up local parks
A group of “fantastic” Havering Sixth Form College students have been praised for their hard work and enthusiasm in working to improve three Havering nature reserves.
The students, who are all studying on the International Baccalaureate course or taking part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, helped with scrub clearance, litter picking, rubbish removal, tree planting and nest box building at Bedfords Park, Ingrebourne Valley and Cranham Brickfields – all Havering Council LNR (Local Nature Reserves).

Two Havering Sixth Form College students have been chosen for a fantastic opportunity to travel to the USA on a two-week trip aimed at building leadership and dialogue skills.
Antoinette Fawole, who is studying Accounts, Economics, English and Psychology at College, and Jahima Nasreen, who is on the International Baccalaureate course, have been selected from hundreds of London students to take part in the Hummer Tuttle Foundation and Windsor Fellowship’s UK-US Youth Dialogue Programme in the summer.

Anthony’s aiming to be table tennis champ
Student Anthony Kent is hoping to keep his eye on the ball and play his way to an individual title at the British Colleges Sports Table Tennis finals at Loughborough in April.
Anthony, 17, who is studying Sociology, Maths and Psychology at Havering Sixth Form College, won the Men’s Doubles event last year with his partner Joe Stannard – beating colleges which specialise in table tennis - and now this year he’s hoping to top that success with a win in the singles section.
The Essex Junior champion, who has represented the county for three years’ running, started playing the sport at the age of 11 at his local youth club.

Striking Images on show at Havering Sixth Form College Students’ Art Exhibition
An art exhibition which showed off students’ vivid imaginations was held at the Robert Beard Youth Centre, Hornchurch, on Friday, February 26.
Double Applied GCSE Art students from Havering Sixth Form College, displayed their varied and striking work in the exhibition entitled Perceptions of Youth.
The exhibition was a special project designed to show how young people in today’s society can be dedicated, creative and free-thinking.
The seven students involved were: Amber-Rose Edwards, Zakk Merison, Shanice Austin, Stephanie Lockwood, Elle Lee, Jade Collins and Ash Langton.

Havering Sixth Form College student has Got To Dance!
A Havering Sixth Form College student has danced her way to the semi-finals of the popular reality TV show Got To Dance.
Jackie Kibuka, 17, is part of the nine-strong dance group Unity Youth who blew the Sky 1 programme’s judges away in auditions and previous rounds with their spectacular street dance routine to win a place in the live shows out of thousands of entries from around the country.
They will appear on the semi final show on Sunday February 7th at 6pm to compete against five other dance acts for their place in the final – and are hoping Havering and the surrounding boroughs will vote for them.

Double success for our bright sparks of the future
Two teams of Havering Sixth Form College business students have proved they are full of enterprising and innovative ideas by coming runners-up in two separate ‘challenge’ competitions.
A team of six students entered the Make Your Mark Challenge 2009 run by Enterprise UK where they had to use local inspiration to come up with a ‘cool creation’.
The other team of nine students had to give a presentation on the development of a new product that was part of the green agenda in the Greenwich Community College/Institute of Directors Enterprise Challenge.
The Make Your Mark team had already won through the HSFC and Havering borough rounds before attending the London finals at the London Met University on November 26th. The team were one of only 10 chosen finalists and consisted of Business Studies A Level students Jake Tunilla, Grace Jackson, Jack Browning, Jack Hodges, James Barnes and David Woodman.

Havering Sixth Form College has been chosen as a finalist in the marketing category of the prestigious Havering Business Awards.
The College is one of three shortlisted for The Marketing Excellence Award, along with Gymophobics, Romford, and Havering College of Further and Higher Education.
The award ‘acknowledges the delivery and application of creative and/or inventive marketing principles’ and the winner will be announced at a glitzy presentation evening on Friday September 25th.

Fantastic achievement for students at Havering Sixth Form College
I am delighted with the A Level pass rate of 98.5% this year. This is, incredibly, a further improvement on last year. Fifty five students have achieved at least three A grades, with nineteen of these achieving four A grades and four students achieving an amazing 5 grade As. The A & B pass rate increased to 43%.
