Eugene Ayanful – double bronze medallist at the European Junior Athletic Championships!
College student Eugene Ayanful ran the race of his life to take the bronze medal in the 100 metres sprint at the European Junior Athletics Championships held in Serbia in July.
Eugene, a Level 3 sport student at Havering Sixth Form College, also won bronze for Great Britain with the 4 x 100m relay team – and now has his sights set on the 2012 Olympics.

Case Study: Havering Sixth Form College - Ensuring excellent provision for Level 2
Havering Sixth Form College is a successful sixth form college in Hornchurch, Essex catering for 2000 students on Level 1, 2 and 3 courses. The Principal, Paul Wakeling, was keen to raise achievement for students on Level 2 courses, in particular. Nationally, provision for Level 2 was patchy, with students sometimes uncommitted and resentful for not being fully on Level 3 programmes. Likewise, staff had not found the experience to be a positive one with results often disappointing.

Careers staff and students from Havering Sixth Form College enjoyed a trip to Cambridge University on July 2nd for an Open Day.
Students including Jinisha Selvaraj, James Watson, Christopher Shipway, Joe Sheldrake, Bansari Pujara, Joshua Setsoafia, Connor Campbell, Lee Nissim, Sumayya Khan, Sabreen Raja, Sau Chan, April Ibinceanu, Alexander Aina, Sabeha Begum, Ruhela Akhtar, Mary Adesunloro, Sakire Dilaver, and Oluwasemilore Oyekunle were able to find out more about the application process during the trip and what it would be like to study there.

Student Selected to Sail the Atlantic this Summer with the Rona Trust Charity
Havering Sixth Form College student, Lee Price (17), has been selected from hundreds of applicants to sail the Atlantic this summer with the Rona Trust charity. On July 18th he will leave his home in Hornchurch and fly to Halifax, Nova Scotia departing from there on the 20th on the journey to Belfast – an estimated four weeks travel!

Andy Sasiadek
Andy Sasiadek (Science Team Manager and Biology Course Leader)
died on Saturday 23 May 2009 aged 51. Andy had been playing cricket when he suffered a suspected heart attack.
He leaves his wife, Theresa, and 2 children. Andy joined the college when it opened in 1991 and throughout his many years with us worked tirelessly for his students and his colleagues, showing the mark of an outstanding professional. In addition many will recall his tremendous wit and will have enjoyed his much-valued friendship. He is going to be missed very much indeed by us all.

Havering Student Captains English Schools’ Team!
English schools will face their French counterparts for the first time in twelve years at Wembley stadium this Saturday (13th June) and Havering Sixth Form College student Jamie Libby will be their Captain!
Jamie (18) who lives in Romford, has attended the College for two years, joining in 2007 when he left Royal Liberty School. He is studying for a BTEC National Certificate in Sport & Development as well as A Levels in Biology and PE. Jamie has recently played in a home nations tournament (they were joint winners), scoring in a 3-0 victory over Wales.

Sean Flies Flag
for UK Maths!
Upminster student, Sean Moss, attended the Maths Olympiad training camp at Oundle School, Peterborough between the 23rd - 27th May. Based on his performance there, he has been selected as one of the six members of the British team who will compete in the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad to be held in Bremen, Germany from 10th –22nd July.

Sport Students' Away Day
Twenty four students on the BTEC First Certificate in Sport, visited Stubbers Adventure Centre recently as part of their Practical Outdoor Adventurous Activities unit. The students participated in variety of land and water based activities. The students have to complete various pieces of coursework that look at issues such as Health and Safety legislation, environmental impacts, organisation and provision within the sector as well as being assessed on their practical performance

in Serbia
Between the 28th April and the 4th May, the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad took place in Kragujevac, Serbia. The UK's team of six top mathematicians included Havering Sixth Form College student, Sean Moss.

Supported Learners
This year's ‘Supported Learners’ event was held on 5th May and celebrated the achievements so far of all students who have received and benefited from the College's dedicated support services and staff. All students were awarded certificates in recognition of the 'journeys travelled' by these students and some students were specially commended for their commitment and resultant successes from the supported student programme. Paul Wakeling (Principal) and Cllr. Keith Darvill (Chair of Governors) presented the certificates and congratulated the students on their achievements. Cllr. Keith Darvill also thanked the staff on behalf of all the Governors.

Paint Balling Trip For Sports Students
Students on the two year BTEC National Diploma & Certificate Sport course recently visited Combat UK Paintball War Games in Laindon.
The visit and paintball activity on 25th March, tied in perfectly with the unit they are currently studying ‘Health and Safety in Sport’ and aimed to reinforce their classroom learning with a practical and stimulating experience looking at health and safety legislation and provision.

New York, New York
Lucky students from a range of Performing Arts courses went to New York for five days in February. During this time, the students participated in a musical theatre workshop with the dance captain from Mary Poppins on Broadway and also took part in a jazz dance workshop with a professional dancer. Students and staff also made time for sightseeing, visiting the Lincoln centre, Radio City, Empire state building, and a cruise down the Hudson river to take in sights such as the statue of liberty. Not wanting to waste a moment, they squeezed in three shows: Stomp, Mary Poppins and New York City Ballet.

College Students Work with Comedy Specialist Venturino
Lucky BTEC National Performing Arts students had the privilege of working with internationally renowned physical comedy specialist Antonio Venturino for a week.
Venturino, founder of Coup de Masque, has worked with the renowned Italian satirist Dario Fo and taught leading companies around the world. Fo, also a playwright and theatre director, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997.

¡Viva España!
In February, 22 Spanish students from the AS, A2 and IB Spanish courses went on a five-day trip to Granada in the South of Spain to improve their language skills. Students stayed in pairs with specially selected host families which they found really useful in giving them an insight into the Spanish way of life.

The College’s Art and Design students recently benefited from a four day visit from the artist, David Blandy, whose video work was nominated for a Jerwood Prize in 2008.

Sean received the invite, along with congratulations from Dr G C Smith, BMO chair and IMO team leader, on the strength of his BMO second round paper.

In June of last year, A Level Physics students at Havering Sixth Form College were inspired by theoretical physicist, Dr David Berman, from Queen Mary University who told them about his work with physicists at the CERN particle physics research centre. The students learned about the many areas of particle physics and the formation of the early universe following the Big Bang.

Havering Sixth Form College student Sean Moss has qualified for the second round of the British Mathematical Olympiad for the second year running. This will take place on Thursday 29th January in the college.

Focus On.... Former Students – Stephen Wade
Former Havering Tuition Centre student, Stephen Wade, left the Centre in July 2007 after completing his GCSEs. He then came to Havering Sixth Form College where, at the end of his first year, he was presented with the Art Student of the Year Award.
Stephen (17) admits that the first time he came to College it seemed really big but after a couple of months he got used to it and made lots of new friends.

Students undertaking the BTEC First Diploma in Sport and Tourism recently sat and passed their NVCO Appointed Person First Aid Course. This is an additional qualification that boosts students' CVs and increases their chances of employment. The qualification forms part of a unit on Health, Safety and Injury.

Business Studies Student Wins 'Apprecitice' Membership!
At the AQA AS Business Studies conference on Monday 15th December, the audience of approximately 1100 students was challenged to come up with a new business idea and be prepared to pitch it to the entire audience.
We are not entirely sure how many entrants there were, but three students were chosen to pitch their idea. The winner was chosen by delegate vote.

As part of their Level 2 vocational Sport and Tourism course, students visited Wembley Stadium in December.
The tour included the changing rooms where top footballers' shirts are displayed, the Press Roomand the Royal Box where they had the chance to hold the FA Cup.

My name is Robert Williams, I live in Hornchurch and I attended the Havering Tuition Centre where I completed my final 2 years of school. It was at the Tuition Centre I successfully gained enough GCSEs to attend Havering Sixth Form College and study my chosen course and begin the long road that is my future!
At Havering Sixth Form College I studied the BTED National Diploma in Sport Development & Fitness: the course was equivalent to 3 A levels. It was a daunting task attending College, leaving the small walls of the Tuition Centre behind for the vast open life that is College.

Generous students have donated gifts, food, soft toys and toiletries in the College's annual Christmas Hamper event. Working in tutor groups, the students make and decorate a festive hamper which they then fill with goodies.

A busy term's football has seen some excellent matches for the College's three sides. The 1st XI and 2nd XI have both progressed into the semi-finals of the Essex Cup with some hard fought matches with the 3rd XI still to play their next round of the Essex Cup. the 1st XI has also reached the quater-finals of the London Cup.

Joe Roukin takes on the West End for Charity
Joe Roukin lives in North London with his wife Sheara. He currently teaches on the Art & Design courses and is an active member of the college community, co-ordinating the annual Christmas card competition and contributing to the college's marketing group. Outside of college, he undertakes freelance design work and is the graphic designer for a teatre company called Eyebrow Productions.

Little Shop of Horrors!
The students studying BTEC Performing Arts, a new course at the college, are in the process of demonstrating what they have learned on the course so far by staging a version of Little Shop of Horrors in the college theatre, Tuesday 9th to Friday 12th December.
This is a chance for them to show off some of the skills they have aquired during the course, not just as performers, but as professional practitioners. They are not only starring in the show, but have been responsible for every aspect of the production, from securing the rights and casting to managing the whole budget themselves, running the whole company as professionals.

Christmas Quiz Night Huge Success!!
On Tuesday 9th December, the Upper Sixth Executive PA group's 7th Christmas Quiz Night took place in the Gatehouse Building. It was attended by 120 staff, parents and students. The purpose of the Quiz Night was to enable students on the course to demonstrate their planning and organisational skills for a large event, as required on the course - and indeed they applied these skills to excellent effect on the night.
Tara Peppard and Ingrid Deane were confident quizmasters, with Michaela Sweeney chairing the panel of judges, managing the electronic scoreboard and quiz questions.

Havering Sixth Form College Celebrates Black History Month
Last Friday, a number of Havering Sixth Form College students organised an event in the Gate House to celebrate Black History Month. As well as providing food, the gospel Choir sang and great speeches were made to inspore the audience. The event was such a success with students (and staff) dancing and singing, that the participants diddn't get time to watch the film that had been planned. In total, over one hundred and fifty pound was raised for the Afro-Caribbean Leukaemia Trust where bone marrow donors are in short supply for the Black and ethnic minority communities.

Havering Sixthy Form College Student Representing England in the Commonwealth Youth Games in India
Havering Sixth Form College student Chino Okpokiri recently returned from in Pune, India, which hosted the Commonwealth Youth Games for 2008 this October. Representing England in the 110 metres hurdle sprint, Chino, who competed under his middle name Emmanuel and is one of the top ten sprinters in the country, achieved a very respectable eighth place.

Fantastic Achievement for Students at Havering Sixth Form College
I am delighted with the A level pass rate of 98.3% this year. This is a further improvement on last year. Thirty three students have achieved three A grades or more with nine of these achieving for A grades. The A & B pass rate was over 42%.

Student Success in 2008 : Havering Sixth Form College Students in Top Ten
Four Havering Sixth Form College students were among the hightest scoring candidates in this summer's examinations.
Mohammed Abdul Muhaumen, Hamza Qulatein and Thomas Shannon, all aged 17, were among the top ten who achieved the highest overall marks in Graphic Design. They competed against over 2000 entries to finish in the top ten.
