Student Success in 2011

Tremendous achievement for students at Havering Sixth Form College

I am delighted with the A Level pass rate of 98.4% this year. This is another year of fantastic results for students at Havering Sixth Form College. A total of 72 students gained at least one A* grade, there were 91 A* grades overall and 46 students gained at least 3 As at A Level. The A*, A and B pass rate is 41.2%.

These results are due to hard work, a love of learning and genuine commitment from young people, teachers and support staff in the College. Our students will be well placed to progress to good universities and relevant employment opportunities.

It is very encouraging that the fantastic learning that has taken place in College this year has been rewarded by such excellent results.

Havering Sixth Form College has a very broad curriculum and welcomes students of all abilities. To see so many students achieving such good results on a variety of learning programmes is truly inspiring

Charlie, who lives in Romford, will be taking a gap year before studying Biomedical Sciences at University in 2012. Last year he also achieved four A grades AS Level. Now I am looking forward to my gap year and getting some experience in the medical field to help with my University course next year. I am aiming to be a doctor or a paediatrician, so these grades have definitely put me on track for that.”

Emma Webb

Emma Webb

Ex-Emerson Park School pupil Emma Webb achieved an amazing three A* grades in Philosophy, Psychology and Religious Studies. The exceptional student, who lives in Hornchurch, will now go on to read Theology and Religious Studies at Cambridge University. She said: “I’m not sure that it has really sunk in yet but I am excited about studying at Cambridge under the guidance of world-renowned theologians. I studied so hard to get these results, I practically never left the College library! I wanted to do everything I could so I knew that whatever grades I got, I couldn’t have done any more. The College has been fantastic and I particularly want to thank Nikki Phelps in Careers who was brilliant and helped me so much.”

Emma’s future ambition is to be a Professor of Theology and Hebrew. She added that she was delighted to have got into Cambridge but was a little surprised: “It’s strange because I thought my interview went terribly; I tripped over, fell off my chair and was thoroughly questioned in areas outside of my expertise; I think the best thing to do in these situations is to think on your feet and most importantly, to be thoughtful and confident,” she said.

Kelly Sears

Kelly Sears
Kelly achieved an incredible A* in General Studies and two A grades in History and Sociology - despite suffering from the debilitating illness narcolepsy. This is on top of achieving an A* in A Level Business Studies, and two A grades in AS History and Sociology last year. The former Warren School pupil’s illness means that she often falls asleep without any notice, leading to collapse even when walking or talking. To help her, she is accompanied around College by her dog Theo who has been trained to alert Kelly when she is about to have an attack of narcolepsy. She is also supported by the College Care Team.

Kelly, who lives in Chadwell Heath, has had to motivate herself to study a lot on her own at home as she is often too tired because of her condition to come into College. Her grades are even more outstanding considering she started College with just one A, four Bs, three Cs and one D grade in her GCSE exams.  She said: “I am really so happy with these results. All the studying has been worth it. The College has been fantastic for me, particularly the Care Team who have become such good friends of mine. I am going to miss everyone.”

Kelly received a Jack Petchey Award for her academic achievements. She is now planning on taking a break from studying and is looking for employment. Theo will also accompany Kelly in the workplace. In the future she aims to have a career in counselling.

She is now working on an Internship at the Deutsche Bank in the City of London from 9am to 5.30pm each day and she insists that she still has time to party! “I do go out and socialise too – I love to party with my friends. I somehow manage to fit it all in with good time management. I am used to being very busy as I have been doing it since secondary school.”

Already this year Kike has represented Great Britain in the javelin at the  European Juniors in Estonia, coming 17th, and at the world trials, coming 8th, and although she knows she won’t be ready for the London 2012 Olympics, she is working towards 2016.

She said: “I am disciplined with myself – I have to be. My ambition is to be an elite athlete and an investment banker and you cannot do either of these without hard work and discipline.”
