Race for Life team set to raise over £3,000 for Cancer ResearchPhotos from the day ... We did it! Havering Sixth Form College’s fantastic team of 75 women took part in the Race for Life on Sunday July 4th – and look set to raise an incredible £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.
On a scorching hot day and cheered on by family, friends and supporters, the team joined the thousands of other like-minded women in a snaking sea of pink and white to complete the 5K course at Hylands Park, Chelmsford. Some of the College team ran the race in just over half an hour and others jogged or walked the distance – but all were greeted with a huge cheer as they crossed the finish line. Wearing their orange sashes, the women were easily identifiable and the College team received many mentions by the race commentator as the participants wound their way around the tree-lined course. After the race, and joined by other College staff members, family and friends, many stayed on for a picnic in the park to soak up the wonderful feeling created by the event - a happy yet poignant atmosphere because most women taking part were remembering loved ones who had died from cancer. Jill Wilkens, Assistant Principal, Teaching & Learning and External Relations at the College has been the driving force behind the team and was competing in her 14th Race for Life. She said: “It was a great day out and an excellent team-bonding exercise as well. I am delighted that we have raised so much money for Cancer Research UK. We have virtually doubled our target of £1,500 as we look set to achieve over £3,000, which is incredible!”. Following their success in the 5k race, many of the women are already talking about next year’s event and at least six members of staff have been inspired to enter the 10k race for Cancer Research at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, on October 3rd. The donations are still coming in. It’s not too late to sponsor the team. Just click on the link: |
