Awards

An Awards Evening to celebrate students who have achieved success and shown outstanding commitment to their studies was held at Havering Sixth Form College.

Attended by parents, staff and special guests, the evening was a chance to applaud those students who dedicated themselves this year to achieving the best they possibly can.

Bursary awards consisting of either a laptop or £450 were presented to seven exceptional students for excellent progress and attitude in their subject area.

Many other young people were rewarded for improvement, commitment, reliability and outstanding attendance.

Principal Paul Wakeling said the Awards Evening was a celebration of the students' success and a time to reflect on all the fantastic things that they had achieved this year. He said the College was proud to be honouring them for their hard work and exceptional attitude.

He said: “Sometimes, for whatever reason, school does not work out for all students. But for some of these students here tonight, something special has happened. They have started College and have made a decision to commit, to attend, to work and try as hard as they can and to make a success of themselves. You need a commitment to do your best and all of these young people have had that this year.”

Former student Deren Aygin, who left College in 2011, told students to never give up on their dreams and be proud of their achievements.

Deren, who previously attended Sanders Draper School, had always wanted to be a doctor, but said he felt rejected and deflated when he was turned down for medical school after his A Levels. He said: “But I now realise that it wasn’ t a failure - it was life giving me an opportunity. So I became a police officer and my experiences in that career shaped me as a person. A few years later, the same medical school accepted me because I was then the type of person they wanted and I’m now training to be a doctor.”

He told the students: “The next time life throws a hurdle at you, don‘t see it as a barrier, see it as an opportunity.”

Paul Wakeling then presented the Bursary Awards. He spoke of the significance of these special awards which are handed out in memory of five members of staff from the College and one student who sadly passed away while working or studying here. They were presented to the following students:
