College in top 100 for Investors in Diversity in UK

The College has been recognised for its ethos of inclusion – beating 600 organisations to come in the top 100 in the country for Investors in Diversity.

Principal Paul Wakeling, Assistant Principal Andrew Frater and Associate Principal Sue Bannocks all attended the National Centre for Diversity Awards Ceremony in Birmingham and heard some inspiring speeches which emphasised why the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion must be a focus of all learning organisations.

The College was also shortlisted for three awards - Chief Executive of the Year, Principal of the Year and the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Lead of the Year.

College in top 100 for Investors in Diversity in UK | January 2016Paul Wakeling said: “While we didn’t win the awards for which we were nominated, our achievement of 90th place is an indicator that we are making significant progress towards our mission of aiming to be ‘the first choice outstanding provider of full-time education for 16-19 year olds in the area embracing diversity and creating excellent opportunities for all’.

“It was useful to meet with others within and beyond our sector. Shaun Tymon, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Coast Homes, who won the award for Chief Executive of the Year, made the comment that ‘we do not live by these values… to win awards, but to reach [the] objective of building inclusive communities, where everyone can access life improving opportunities’.

“My personal view is that by promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in College we raise aspirations for all, we level the playing field for all and we make the world a fairer place. It was also pleasing that the National Centre for Diversity acknowledged the strength of all the candidates in each category and the advisor, Irfaan Arif, commended our work that has put a focus on EDI at the heart of our organisation.

“We are a multi-cultural College in an area that is predominantly white. Our students benefit from this greatly as they are all exposed to, challenged by and are able to learn from, cultural heritage and viewpoints that may differ from their own.”
