Consultant’s employability session inspires students to reach for their career goals

An employability skills session from a visiting management consultant has inspired Business students to reach for their career-related goals.

Murshed Alam, who works for Accenture - a global professional services company which provides strategy, consulting, digital and operations services – delivered a motivational talk to students who are studying for the Understanding Enterprise & Entrepreneurship BTEC Diploma.

Murshed worked with the students, who all attended college for the day dressed in smart business attire and with up-to-date CVs, on several employment-related exercises, asking them to come up with a five-year plan of reaching their career goals.

He introduced them to the field of consultancy and answered questions on apprenticeship and internship opportunities with Accenture and also gave students one-to-one support on strengthening their CVs and interview skills.

He then selected 10 students to interview, based on their performance in the group tasks. During the mock interviews Murshed made notes on the candidate’s performance, and gave them feedback in order to boost their confidence when attending a real job interview.

He encouraged several students to begin apprenticeship or internship applications with Accenture and he shared his contact details, offering them his support with any applications they make.

Business tutor Ruksar Akhtar said: “Murshed was very impressed with how well behaved, mature and focused the Enterprise and Entrepreneurship students were throughout his session. He definitely motivated them to aim high and achieve their goals.”

One student said: “The Accenture employee was a great inspiration. He was very young and has done really well to become a management consultant. He made me realise that if I have a plan and try my best to stick to it and overcome setbacks logically, then I will eventually reach my goals.”

Another one said: “Murshed gave me some great feedback about my interview technique and gave me some points to work on. I had an enjoyable day finding out about the successful company that he came from. I will be emailing him when I am ready to apply for an internship as it does seem very interesting.”
