Media students launch social action campaigns to raise awareness

Social action campaigns on issues relevant to young people were launched by students on the Creative Media Digital Publishing course as part of their current BTEC assignment.

They chose a cause or charity they felt passionate about, researched it and then planned and implemented a campaign in order to raise awareness.

The students designed promotional materials, created websites, made posters, baked cakes and set out tables during lunch time in the College Atrium to promote their causes, bringing them to the attention of other students.

They then gathered feedback to gauge how effective their campaigns had been.

The social action campaigns raised issues such as alcohol abuse, the misuse of drugs, aggression and violence, stereotyping, abusive relationships, equality and diversity and cyber-bullying.

Creative Media Faculty Leader Brian Martin, who teaches the Digital Publishing BTEC course, said: “The students have really engaged with the idea of creating these social action campaigns.  Many of them are very relevant to the problems faced by young people today. The Digital Publishing course gives them experience of analysing and solving problems from the real world.”
