Seventh for Joe in British Modern Biathlon – now he wants top three place next year!
Student Joe Groves secured a national top 10 place when he competed for Havering Sixth Form College in the British Schools & Colleges Modern Biathlon championships.
Joe’s 7th place was a tremendous achievement considering he was one of only 3 competitors in the top 7 who attend state schools or colleges. The others were all from independent fee paying and boarding schools.
But not content with his success – and being the highest placed in the competition from any schools in the local area – Joe, 17, from Upminster, is now back in training and aiming to get a top 3 place next year.
His mum, Laura Groves, said: “Joe had come 9th in the competition last year so he was pleased to have beaten his personal best. But he had been ill the week before the competition with a heavy cold and he wasn't able to train so he was very happy with the results.”
The Under 17s Modern Biathlon comprises a 200 metre swim and a 1,600 metre run. It is the combined score in both events that decides where an athlete is placed.
Joe trains six or seven times a week, balancing his studies at College and his work as a part-time Lifeguard at the new Sapphire Ice & Leisure Centre in Romford.
