Library launches Literacy Week activities

Reading, writing and everything book-related was celebrated during Literacy Week held at the College Library.

Two visiting authors gave workshops to students and the winner of a Book Review competition, Caleb Hernandez, received the prize of a £15 book token from Librarian Gemma Osborn.

Former Abbs Cross School pupil Caleb wrote the winning review of a book titled Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

Caleb, who is studying A Levels in Sociology, Criminology and Photography, said: “I love reading – I read about 10 books or more during the summer and I thought it would be a good idea to enter the competition. I was really happy when I found out I’d won as I didn’t expect it at all!”

The winning review will be published in the next edition of the College student magazine, The Writeous.

During Literacy Week, comic creator and graphic novelist Richy K. Chandler held a workshop on producing comics and illustrations and young adult fiction novelist Catherine Johnson gave a very informative presentation.

A reading challenge called Reading Ahead and a Christmas Creative Writing competition were both launched by library staff in a bid to get more students engaged with the enjoyment of reading and writing.

Entries to the Creative Writing competition can be a short story or poem no longer than 800 words with the theme of Christmas. First prize is a £25 book token and the runner up will receive a writing journal.
