Students aim to find the Middle Ground during passionate debate
A debate entitled Where Are We As A Society – United or Conflicted? was held for students to discuss issues including immigration, gender and the police.
The group discussion was organised by A Level student Gabrielle Prah who wanted to use the debate to write an article for student magazine, The Writeous.
Inspired by the Youtube series Middle Ground, Gabrielle invited students with different and similar beliefs to join the discussion, posing the questions: We live in an age of progression – do we? We have overcome our restraints and we are liberated – are we?
The statements debated were: Immigration is holding back the UK; White privilege doesn’t exist; There are more than two genders; I trust the police to protect me.
The discussions were passionate and heartfelt and sometimes there were deep differences in viewpoints on the issues, but despite this, participants listened to each other and were tolerant of others’ opinions.
Many of the College’s Debating Society members attended, as did students involved in the College Magazine Enrichment group that meets weekly to produce a vibrant and thought-provoking publication with in-depth articles every term.
