One year Level 2 BTEC course of 8x 70min lessons per week (equivalent to two GCSEs).

Course Summary

The aim of the BTEC First Certificate in Sport is to give students a taste of the theory and practical-based skills needed to progress within the sporting industry. You will develop your understanding of the physiological needs of a sportsman or woman, such as fitness testing and training. Alongside this, you will develop the skills needed in order to run successful coaching sessions. This course will therefore suit students who would like to progress to a Level 3 sports qualification and further university and/or work generally within the sports and leisure industry.

Course Information

This course is a great foundation for those students who want to develop their knowledge and skills in sports theory and practice. You will study eight units overall, two core, one mandatory and five optional units. The two core units cover Fitness for Sport; and Practical Sports Performance. The mandatory unit covers Anatomy and Physiology looking at Sports Performance. The additional units cover a range of sporting activities.

The First Certificate is a Level 2 BTEC and is equivalent to two GCSE’s. It is studied alongside 2 other GCSEs or equivalent in the Progression Year. It provides an opportunity for students to focus on the development of personal, learning and thinking skills, and gain wider skills in a sporting context. Students are awarded grades of Pass, Merit or Distinction. Two units are externally assessed, the others are internally set and assessed. The majority of students on this course will take part in team sports as an extra-curricular activity.

Students can progress to the Level 3 BTEC Sport courses here at College or they can go on to an apprenticeship. If successful at Level 3, they can then progress to university or employment. Former students have gone on to study to be PE teachers and sports therapists and those going straight into employment after College have progressed to careers in the local sporting industry, for example, as personal trainers, outdoor activities instructors, sports coaches and sports development officers.
